The Day Ahead

All eyes turn to China's trade data at 1pm AEST, with exports and imports both forecast to slow from last month's blistering pace. Consensus looks for exports to ease to 25% year-on-year growth from 23.9% previously — a modest deceleration that would still signal robust demand for Australian bulk commodities. The trade balance is expected to narrow slightly to $119.1 billion, but any downside surprise in iron ore import volumes will hit the AUD and the miners hard given the recent rally in the steelmaking commodity.

Locally, the Westpac consumer confidence index is expected to fall to 85.7 from 88.9 — a third straight monthly decline that would confirm the housing slump is now infecting household sentiment. NAB business confidence is also tipped to deteriorate to -8. With the RBA's Hunter and Hauser both speaking today, expect any hawkish language to reinforce market pricing for a rate hike, particularly after yesterday's confirmation that Treasury warned the government its tax changes would lift rents and lower prices. The property market story is far from done.

Oil remains the macro wildcard. With Brent pushing above US$96 and Morgan Stanley calling for $100 in Q4, the energy complex will again lead the ASX. The question is whether surging fuel costs — now feeding into inflation expectations — force central banks to tighten further into a slowing housing market. That tension between energy-driven inflation and property-led economic weakness is the defining trade of the quarter.

Yesterday's Key Stories

Economic Releases

  • German industrial production fell 1.1% month-on-month in July, a sharp miss against the 0.1% consensus and a worrying sign for European manufacturing demand heading into Q4.
  • UK house prices contracted 0.2% month-on-month, missing expectations for a 0.2% gain, adding to the global picture of property market weakness.

Property & Macro

  • Treasury documents released under FOI confirm officials warned Treasurer Jim Chalmers that negative gearing and CGT changes would lower house prices, lift rents, and reduce supply — the government's own modelling showed prices falling 2% and rents rising $2 per week, but opposition MPs are demanding full disclosure of the underlying assumptions.
  • The residential property slump is now "seismic," with Morgan Stanley forecasting a 15% peak-to-trough decline — the biggest in Australian history — as mum-and-dad investors shift capital into commercial property, pushing rents higher and adding to inflation pressures.
  • NSW stamp duty revenue plunged 20% in July to $739.2 million, with Barrenjoey warning the downturn will wipe $2 billion off each state's collections this financial year and potentially trigger credit downgrades for NSW and Queensland.
  • Bathla Group administrators are scrambling for emergency funding as 200 staff were stood down, with a small group of lenders led by PAG, Ray White Capital, and Centuria negotiating a $3-5 million loan to keep the collapsed developer operating until the end of September.
  • Treasury's warning that the Suburban Rail Loop would cost $37 billion — far above public estimates — has been confirmed by Victorian treasury documents, with the funding gap now projected at $500-750 million annually for 25 years as bond yields have doubled since 2020.
  • One Nation has proposed allowing renters and mortgage holders to divert 3% of their superannuation contributions to take-home pay for three years, drawing criticism from Labor and the super industry but not outright rejection from the Coalition.

Mining & Energy

  • Stanmore Resources has agreed to acquire the Moranbah South coking coal tenements from Exxaro for US$105 million, adding 724 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources adjacent to its Eagle Downs and Isaac Downs Extension projects in Queensland's Bowen Basin.
  • Santos will increase its stake in the $19.5 billion Papua LNG project to 21% by paying $189 million to TotalEnergies, with ExxonMobil taking over as operator and a final investment decision expected in the December quarter.
  • Australia's oil production fell nearly 54% year-on-year in the June quarter to 2.9 million barrels — one of the steepest drops on record — driven by technical issues at Woodside's North-West Shelf and Cyclone Narelle, undermining fuel security ambitions.
  • The 175-year price relationship between nickel and copper is breaking, with nickel's traditional premium over copper collapsing to a record low as Indonesian laterite supply surges while copper struggles with declining ore grades and a lack of new discoveries.
  • Forrestania Resources completed its $300 million acquisition of the Edna May Gold Project from Ramelius, paying $210 million in cash and 225 million shares to secure a second processing hub in Western Australia.
  • Brightstar Resources reported its highest individual gold assay to date at Sandstone, returning 1m at 751 g/t gold from the Bull Oak deposit, as drilling continues ahead of the pre-feasibility study.
  • Jet Zero Australia raised $30 million from POSCO, Airbus, and Qantas at a valuation of up to $500 million to develop sustainable aviation fuel production in Townsville, with the plant capable of scaling to 700 million litres annually.

Today's Useless Fact

A palindrome is a sentence or group of sentences that reads the same backwards as it does forward: Ex:  Red rum, sir, is murder. Ma is as selfless as I am. Nurse, I spy gypsies. Run!  A man, a plan, a canal - Panama. He lived as a devil, eh?
