The Day Ahead

All eyes are on the Australian labour market at 11:30 AEST. The consensus is for a sharp slowdown to just 15,000 jobs added in August after July's bumper 76,300 print, with the unemployment rate expected to tick up to 4.5%. A miss here would reinforce market bets on RBA easing and pressure the AUD — a key swing factor for gold and base metal prices denominated in the currency.

China's Loan Prime Rate decision at 11:15 is expected to hold at 3.0% (1Y) and 3.5% (5Y), but any surprise cut would be a major tailwind for iron ore and base metals. Later, US initial jobless claims (forecast 201K vs 209K prior) and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index (forecast 25 vs 41.4 prior) will test the resilience of the US economy — a soft print could reignite recession fears and weigh on industrial commodities. Watch for the ECB's monetary policy meeting accounts at 21:30 for any hints on European growth, which feeds into global demand sentiment.

Yesterday's Key Stories

Economic Releases

  • UK inflation rose to 2.9% YoY in July, in line with consensus and up from 2.6%, but core inflation held at 2.6% against a 2.5% forecast — sticky services inflation may delay Bank of England rate cuts, supporting GBP and pressuring the USD.
  • South African inflation fell sharply to 4.3% YoY from 5.0%, well below the 4.5% consensus, opening the door for SARB easing and providing a mild tailwind for gold prices.
  • US EIA crude oil stocks rose 4.4M barrels against a 0.6M draw forecast, a bearish signal for oil prices, though gasoline inventories also built unexpectedly.

Gold & Precious Metals

  • Evolution Mining delivered a record FY26 result, with statutory profit up 59% to $1.48 billion, driven by a 40% surge in gold prices to $6,023/oz; the Mungari expansion came in 15% under budget and the company swung to a $19 million net cash position.
  • Rox Resources secured a Native Title Mining Agreement for its Youanmi gold mine in WA, clearing a key hurdle toward first gold in mid-2027; the deal includes an upfront payment and production-based royalty.
  • Forrestania Resources has secured a 56.3% majority in Zenith Minerals, but Takeovers Panel interim orders are stalling the takeover; the implied offer value has fallen to 8.5 cents per share, yet Zenith's board still recommends acceptance.

Battery & Critical Minerals

  • Iluka Resources is reducing debt at its mineral sands operations as the Balranald and Eneabba projects advance, positioning the company for a potential supply squeeze in zircon and rare earths.
  • Victory Metals has mapped out a 20-year rare earth project life, adding to the growing pipeline of Australian rare earth supply outside China — a strategic priority for Western governments.

Today's Useless Fact

The Boston University Bridge (on Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts) is the only place in the world where a boat can sail under a train driving under a car driving under an airplane.
