The Day Ahead

All eyes are on Beijing this morning. China's August activity data drops at 12:00 AEST — industrial production, retail sales, and fixed asset investment. Consensus expects industrial production to accelerate to 4.8% from 4.5%, with retail sales also ticking up to 0.8%. A miss on any of these — particularly given yesterday's shockingly weak new yuan loan figure of just CNY60 billion against a CNY400 billion consensus — would reignite concerns about Chinese demand for iron ore and base metals. Watch the house price index at 11:30 for further evidence of the property sector's stabilisation, or lack thereof.

The RBA remains the other key domestic story. With banks cutting variable mortgage rates to chase market share despite the Reserve Bank threatening another hike, and former board member Ian Harper revealing split votes at one in three meetings, the board's credibility is under scrutiny. Expect more noise around the Macquarie capital structure dispute — CBA's aggressive push against its rival's non-operating holding company advantage is escalating and APRA is listening.

Oil above US$104 remains the elephant in the room. With Iran set to unveil a Strait of Hormuz agreement to Gulf nations, there's potential for a geopolitical premium to unwind quickly — or to spike further if the deal falls through. Energy stocks will drive the ASX today, but the bigger question is whether sustained oil strength forces the RBA's hand on rates sooner than markets expect.

Yesterday's Key Stories

Economic Releases

  • China's new yuan loans came in at just CNY60 billion against a consensus of CNY400 billion — a massive miss that signals credit demand is collapsing and adds to pressure on Beijing to deliver more stimulus.
  • India's inflation rate rose to 4.82% year-on-year, above the 4.8% consensus and up from 4.44% previously, complicating the RBI's easing path.
  • Canadian inflation held at 3.0% year-on-year as expected, though core inflation ticked up to 2.4% from 2.3%, suggesting sticky price pressures north of the border.

Iron Ore & Steel

  • Whyalla's blast furnace restart has been abandoned, with up to 600 jobs cut. Administrators KordaMentha and the SA government gave up on the ageing furnace, which has been offline since April; the rolling mill will continue using imported steel. The sale process is down to two bidders — M Resources and Jindal Steel — both assuming a new furnace costing about $600 million is needed.
  • Pilbara Ports moved 65.9Mt in August, with Port Hedland up 5% year-on-year to 47.4Mt on strong iron ore demand from China, which took about 38Mt of Port Hedland's ore. Dampier fell 8% to 14.8Mt.

Gold & Battery Minerals

  • Sinclair Gold doubled its Mt Henry gold resource to 1.8 million ounces (47.9Mt at 1.2g/t), with most now in measured and indicated categories supporting open-pit potential.
  • Catalyst Metals lifted Trident underground gold reserves 32% to 524,000 ounces at 4.2g/t, supporting its plan to double production across the Plutonic belt.
  • Tim Goyder's Minerals 260 is raising $250 million to advance the Bullabulling gold project, with Franco-Nevada providing a $170 million royalty commitment and a $30 million equity investment.
  • Victory Metals secured a mining lease for its North Stanmore heavy rare earth project in WA, and noted a non-binding Letter of Interest from the US Export-Import Bank for up to US$190 million in financing.
  • Kuniko's Phase 2 drilling at Silica Hill extended the mineralised system by 100 metres, with assays pending ahead of a December 2026 resource upgrade.

AI, Energy & Data Centres

  • Mark Cutifani quit the Woodside board just six months after joining to take a seat at Northern Star — a boardroom switch that has tongues wagging given his undisclosed links to fellow director Tony O'Neill and his involvement with activist investor Elliott Management, which is now targeting Northern Star.
  • A proposed 2.16GW data centre in Queensland's Western Downs could draw a quarter of the state's electricity usage, reigniting the energy generation debate as the AI boom collides with renewables targets.
  • Barrenjoey's Jo Masters forecasts data centre investment will reach $110 billion by 2030, boosting GDP but stoking inflation and keeping the RBA from cutting rates.
  • AI titans including OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk have all called for slowing AI development — but Trump has rejected any slowdown, insisting the US must win the race against China. Investors see the push as potentially entrenching incumbents while hitting startups and infrastructure stocks.
